Bunker Silos: Site Preparation Requirements

Al’s Concrete Products has been installing precast concrete bunker silos for over 40 years. Through our years of experience, we have developed recommendations to achieve proper installation.

The desired site where the bunker will be placed should have at least a 0.5% to 2% slope. Approximately 8” of 1” to 2” screened rock will be required under each wall, covering an optional 4” tile line with a gravity outlet. The tile line is recommended as it helps keeps the soil dry under the wall for better stability, and keeps excess moisture and rainwater out of the feed, thus giving you higher quality feed.

If you choose not to utilize the drain tile recommendation, the 8” compacted gravel base under each wall is still required for stability. This depth could vary, though, depending upon your location’s soil conditions. Prior to installation, the base must be rough graded to within 1” of final grade. When we come to install the walls, our crew will do the final grading. The customer will be responsible for providing Al’s Concrete with a skid loader and fine gravel (3/8” or less) to do the final grading.
